0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Posture

Loosening rolls through the body, unhurried hip circles and tall posture drills, settling you into the languid, teasing rhythm that gives burlesque its character before any routine begins.

10–25 mins

Struts, Bumps & Grinds

The trademark moves picked apart one by one — a self-assured catwalk strut, a playful hip bump, the slow grind and a shoulder shimmy carried off with swagger.

25–40 mins

Chair & Floor Work

Curving over a chair, rising again with control and easing down into low poses — the bold, sculpted shapes that lend a routine its theatrical edge.

40–50 mins

Trailing a feather boa, drawing off a long satin glove and teasing with a fan — learning to work a prop so it lands on the beat with a cheeky glance.

Routine & Cool Down

Joining everything into a brief cabaret number danced full-out in character, rounded off by a relaxed stretch to wind down and cement the evening's work.

About Burlesque Dance Classes in Chester

At its heart, burlesque is the playful glamour of cabaret — a mix of dance, comedy and unashamed showing off. Our weekly burlesque classes in Chester teach the vintage vocabulary that brings it to life: the strut and the pose, the bump-and-grind, slow body rolls and the shimmy, with chair and floor work for theatrical drama. We fold in flair from a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan, then craft it into short routines you can perform with a knowing glance — fully dressed from start to finish.

Chester enjoys its theatre and its nights out, yet a steady weekly burlesque class for adults has been a tricky thing to track down in the city. Ours run from our studio in the heart of the historic centre, a short stroll from the Eastgate Clock, the Rows and the River Dee at the Groves, drawing dancers from across Cheshire and in from Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Wrexham and the Wirral, with Liverpool and Manchester both within easy reach. The atmosphere stays relaxed, a little bit cheeky and completely free of side-eye — somewhere a flash of confidence is genuinely encouraged.

Every body counts as a stage body here, at any age and any level, and newcomers settle in fast. Dance in heels for that long showgirl line or keep barefoot for the floor sections — there is no standard of fitness or flexibility to meet first. Browse all 20 of our dance classes in Chester, or rally a group together for a cheeky burlesque hen party.

What Burlesque Gives You

Confidence You Take Home

Learning to command a space through slow, measured movement pays off well beyond the studio. Dancers head out standing taller, moving with more nerve and feeling far easier in their own skin.

Props and Old-School Glamour

A boa, a glove, a fan and a chair all become tools of the trade. You will pick up the knack of handling them, the statuesque poses and the cheeky timing that lend classic burlesque its sparkle.

A Persona of Your Own

Burlesque gives you an alter ego to slip into for a few minutes — a strut, a look, a wink. Trying on that fearless version of yourself is freeing, and a genuine joy to perform.

Everybody Welcome

No particular age, size, shape or fitness is asked of you up front. The dance makes a virtue of whoever turns up, and the room stays kind, playful and wholly unbothered about how you look.

Your Burlesque Dance Journey

From those opening struts to a polished cabaret number — this is how the progression usually goes.

Week 1–4

Finding the Strut

Getting Started

Your first weeks cover the runway walk, gentle hip circles, a shoulder shimmy and a poised pause. The whole knack is slowing right down and savouring each beat instead of hurrying on.

What to Wear

Choose snug kit you can see your lines in, with a dash of glamour if it suits. Heels lend height, bare feet do the job just as well — entirely your choice.

Month 2–3

Adding the Cheek

Building Technique

Hip bumps, grinds, rolling through the body, early chair work and your first floor poses begin linking into short sequences with real attitude and timing.

Finding a Persona

You start sketching your own burlesque character — a stage name, a mood, a signature walk. It is the moment a curious newcomer slips, almost unnoticed, into being a performer.

Month 4–6

Working the Props

Full Routines

Whole cabaret pieces take shape around your props — the boa, the satin glove, the fan. The focus shifts to filling the room, drawing every eye your way and letting a held silence do the work.

The Art of the Tease

Comic timing, the slow reveal, eye contact and the right track — the stagecraft that lifts a string of moves into an act with character.

Month 6+

Stage-Ready Showgirl

Showcase & Beyond

The chance to perform at a cabaret night or showcase, building a solo of your own with original choreography, a costume idea and a song that is unmistakably yours.

What Comes Next

Carry it into a heels class to sharpen your lines, pull together a few friends for a private booking, or simply keep honing the solo that feels most you.

Burlesque Dance FAQ

A few of the things newcomers most like to clear up before stepping into the spotlight.

Is burlesque something I can try as a total beginner? +

Yes, and plenty of our dancers had never set foot in a studio before. Burlesque leans on cheek and personality rather than crisp technique, which is why we take each strut, shimmy and held pose apart slowly. By the close of one weekly hour in Chester you can have a short number under your belt and feel ready to own it.

What do people usually wear to a burlesque class? +

Go for something snug enough to read your shape in the mirror, then layer on a little old-fashioned glamour if you fancy it. Some dancers love heels for that cabaret line; others stick to bare feet for the grounded work, and both are spot on. Bring a glove or a boa from home if you own one, otherwise our prop box has plenty to share.

Does burlesque mean I have to undress? +

Not at all — your clothes stay on from the first beat to the last. The whole craft is about the tease: a glove easing off, a knowing look across a feather boa, a cheeky bump of the hip, never genuine stripping. What you carry away is posture, presence and the assurance to own a room, and none of that leaves when the music does.

How much does a burlesque class in Chester cost? +

You can pay as you go at £10 for one drop-in, with nothing to join and no paperwork at the door. Keen to keep going? A block of four weeks comes to £32, which works each session out at £8. There is no membership and no contract tying you down, so you simply arrive whenever the week allows.

Where in Chester are the burlesque classes held? +

They take place at our studio in the middle of historic Chester, only a short walk from the Eastgate Clock, the Rows and the riverside at the Groves. The room is private and screened, which fits the playful side of burlesque nicely, and as more sessions open across the area we will steer you toward the nearest one.

Are heels compulsory for the class? +

Not in the slightest. Heels do hand you height and that classic showgirl shape, but a good number of dancers prefer flats or bare feet, particularly for the floor sequences. Start in whatever keeps you steady, and should you want to work up to heels we will build your balance and ankle strength along the way.

Could burlesque help me if I am not very confident? +

It may well be the thing that helps most. A few of our boldest regulars walked in convinced they would freeze in front of anyone. Burlesque hands you a character to inhabit and an unhurried, deliberate way of moving that loosens self-consciousness, so confidence tends to creep up on you quicker than you would imagine.

Which moves are taught across a class? +

Expect a swaggering walk and statuesque poses, hip bumps and grinds, slow rolls through the body and the shimmy, plus chair and floor work brimming with attitude. We thread in flair from a feather boa, a long glove peel and a fan, then shape the lot into a compact, glittering routine you round off with a wink.

Is burlesque suitable for any age or body shape? +

Every shape and every age, full stop. Burlesque grew from the belief that any body belongs on a stage, and our adult sessions welcome dancers from their late teens through to their seventies. Nothing about your size, fitness or flexibility needs fixing beforehand — a bit of curiosity and a streak of mischief will do.

Can I book a one-to-one or private group burlesque session? +

Certainly. We arrange one-to-one coaching and small group bookings whenever you ask, be it for a confidence boost, a birthday treat or some concentrated work on a routine. Get in touch and we will build a session around exactly what you and your friends are after.
