Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Breath & Floor Warm-Up

We start low on the ground with rolling articulations through the spine and long, even breathing, waking the joints and tuning in to how weight and gravity want to move you.

10–25 mins

Release & Contraction

Exploring release technique, the pull of contraction and the lift of suspension, along with the fall-and-recovery cycle that lends contemporary its grounded, flowing feel.

25–40 mins

Travelling & Floorwork

Crossing the studio with spirals, changes of level and gentle elevations, plus routes down to the floor and back up that knit upright and grounded dancing into one.

40–50 mins

Phrase & Expression

Taking on a short set phrase and colouring it with intention, dynamics and real feeling, so the steps carry meaning rather than simply marking out shapes.

50–60 mins

Improvisation & Unwind

A led improvisation to bring everything from the hour together, then unhurried stretching and a calm pause so the body can settle before you set off.

About Contemporary Dance Classes in Chester

Contemporary is the most open and expressive branch of dance — a form that swaps fixed positions for breath, weight and the body's own momentum. Our weekly contemporary classes in Chester draw on release technique, floorwork, contraction and suspension and a healthy dose of improvisation, all in the service of movement that flows and carries genuine emotion. Worked in bare feet or socks, each class builds a movement language that is every bit as emotional as it is athletic.

Chester has its theatres and a lively cultural calendar, yet a steady weekly contemporary class for adults beyond performance circles has long been hard to track down. Ours run from our studio in the heart of the historic city centre, a short walk from the Rows, the City Walls and the River Dee at the Groves, drawing curious movers from across Cheshire and in from Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Wrexham and the Wirral, with Liverpool and Manchester both within easy reach. It is fast turning into a regular haunt for complete newcomers and for grown-ups picking dance back up after a long break — whatever has led you here, the class meets you as you are.

There is no call for flexibility, prior training or a certain build — only an interest in discovering how your body likes to move. Your teacher leads every idea with equal parts anatomical know-how and creative latitude, letting craft and personal voice develop together. Come dressed in soft, stretchy layers, and dance barefoot or in socks. Explore the full set of 20 dance classes in Chester we run, or gather a group together for a one-off hen party dance class.

What Contemporary Gives You

Move How You Feel

Contemporary lets you move out of emotion rather than into a set pose. There is plenty of craft holding it up, but the aim throughout is honest, personal expression that is entirely your own.

Strength From the Ground

Rolling through the floor, suspending and recovering develops deep core strength, mobility and body awareness of a kind that a regular gym session rarely manages to reach.

A Moving Meditation

Phrases driven by breath, along with improvisation, quieten a busy head, making the hour a pressure release where you tune back into the body and leave a little lighter than you arrived.

Tell a Story

Most of all, contemporary teaches you to perform — to shape dynamics, hold inside a stillness and let movement mean something, whether for an audience or simply for yourself.

Your Contemporary Dance Journey

Right from a first cautious roll through the back to dancing with true feeling — here is how things progress.

Week 1–4

Finding the Floor

Getting Started

Articulations through the spine, transfers of weight and your earliest journeys down to the floor and back up. Learning how a breath can begin a movement, and how letting go works hand in hand with gravity.

What to Bring

Comfy, close-fitting kit that moves as you roll, plus bare feet or socks with grip. Pin your hair back and leave heavy trainers at home so nothing snags as you travel across the studio.

Month 2–3

Building Vocabulary

Developing Technique

Contractions and the lift of suspension, the loop of falling then recovering, and spirals carried through travelling phrases. Starting to feel how swing and momentum, rather than brute effort, move you across the room.

First Improvisations

Easy opening exercises in making things up on the spot — responding to a picture, one word or a fragment of music — which grow the nerve to pick movement with no script in front of you.

Month 4–6

Finding Expression

Longer Phrases

Threading floorwork, upright technique and soft jumps into sequences that flow, and playing with contrast — quick to slow, heavy to light, held to free.

Emotional Storytelling

Shading movement with intention and feeling until a phrase reads like a story, and taking your first steps at shaping ideas of your own with a few simple choreographic tools.

Month 6+

The Mover & Maker

Performing & Creating

Sure enough now to interpret, improvise and perform, equipped to build your own phrases, with an optional informal showing to put your work in front of others.

What Comes Next

Take up ballet for a solid technical base, try contact improvisation workshops, or look out for performance projects with movement groups around Chester and the North West.

Contemporary Dance FAQ

A handful of the things people most like to clear up before stepping into their first contemporary class.

Can I take up contemporary in Chester if I have never danced? +

Of course you can. The session is paced for all abilities, and we take each idea — an unfurling of the spine, a contraction, an easy slide to the floor — and break it into bite-sized pieces you can repeat. First-timers settle straight in, and a good few of our movers are grown-ups easing back into dance after years away from it.

What clothes work best for contemporary floorwork? +

Reach for soft, close layers that travel with you as you roll — leggings or joggers with a snug top are ideal. The style is danced in bare feet or socks so you can catch and glide across the studio floor, so leave the trainers in your bag and tuck longer hair out of the way.

What does a contemporary class in Chester cost? +

A single drop-in is £10, with no sign-up fee and no paperwork at the door. Want to commit a little further? A four-week block is £32, which lands every class at £8. There is no membership and nothing to sign, so you simply come along whenever a session fits your week.

Does contemporary dance demand a lot physically? +

It works the body thoroughly, yet it always starts from where you are today. Floorwork, suspensions and travelling phrases build your strength and stamina a little at a time, and an easier version of every exercise is always on offer so you can find your own pace rather than push into strain.

Where in Chester do the contemporary classes happen? +

They run from our studio in the heart of the historic city centre, a short walk from the Eastgate Clock, the Rows and the riverside at the Groves. It is simple to reach on foot or by train, and as we open more sessions across the area we are glad to steer you towards the one nearest home.

Do I have to be flexible before I begin? +

Not in the slightest — flexibility is something the practice grows for you, not a card you have to show at the door. Contemporary cares far more about how you use your own range with breath and intention than about how deep a stretch you can reach, and your mobility eases open the more you dance.

What goes on during a contemporary session? +

We open with a breath-led warm-up on the ground, then move into release technique and the contraction-and-suspension work, before travelling the room with spirals and shifting levels. Each class wraps up with either a set phrase or a guided improvisation, giving you room to shape movement and tell a little of your own story.

Could you explain release technique and floorwork? +

Release technique is the art of unclenching the tension you carry so that breath and gravity, not effort, generate the movement. Floorwork applies that same thinking close to the ground — descending, gliding and lifting back up through the floor so each link between moves feels supple and weighted rather than forced.

Will I be asked to improvise where everyone can see? +

Only to the degree you feel ready. We introduce improvisation softly through small cues — a picture to react to, a lone word or a track to listen for — and you are never singled out. Most dancers wind up regarding it as the stretch of the class they most look forward to.

Can I arrange private contemporary tuition in Chester? +

Yes, gladly. We arrange private and small-group contemporary sessions on request, well suited to deepening your release work, refining a solo or shaping an audition piece. Get in touch and let us know what you are working towards, and we will build the sessions around your goals.
