Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Loosen & Listen

Rolling out the ankles, soft bounces to find the floor and clapping the beat back, so the swing has settled into your body before any metal meets wood.

10–25 mins

Sound Building

Shuffles, flaps, cramp rolls, ball changes and paradiddles, drilled for an even, ringing tone while your weight learns to travel without the pulse drifting.

25–40 mins

Time Steps

Stitching those sounds into single, double and triple time steps — the staple phrases sitting underneath nearly every tap number you will ever learn.

40–50 mins

Number or Shim-Sham

A short routine or the timeless shim-sham, dropped over swing, jazz or funk depending on what the week happens to call for.

50–60 mins

Trading & Cool-Down

A relaxed call-and-response, swapping a handful of bars each, then easing the calves and ankles out to finish the hour.

About Tap Dance Classes in Chester

Tap makes a drummer of your feet. As the metal plates bite the floor, every shuffle, flap and stamp lays down a sound, and a string of them grows into a rhythm you compose mid-step. Our weekly tap classes in Chester teach rhythm tap from the very first beat — clean tone before anything else, then time steps, paradiddles, travelling phrases and the musicality that lets you live inside a track rather than tread along on top of it. An hour that works as a dance lesson and a music lesson at once.

Chester loves a show, from the Storyhouse stage to the buskers along the Rows, yet a dependable weekly tap class for adult beginners and improvers has long been a tricky thing to find. Ours run from a studio in the heart of the historic city centre, a short walk from the Eastgate Clock and the River Dee at the Groves, drawing tappers from across Cheshire and in from Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Wrexham and the Wirral, with Liverpool and Manchester each within an hour. The floor is firm and rewards a sharp strike, and the focus stays on real rhythm instead of chasing flashy tricks — and as more venues open, a class nearer you could well follow.

You need no experience and no particular fitness to begin, and you do not even need your own shoes for that first week — we keep spare tap shoes to borrow. Your teacher raises the challenge one sound at a time, at a pace adult learners genuinely enjoy. Browse all 20 of our dance classes in Chester, or round up your friends for a themed hen party.

What Tap Gives You

Borrow a Pair First

No kit needed to start. We keep spare tap shoes for newcomers, so you can hear those plates ring out before you spend anything on a pair of your own.

Play the Music

Tap is the one dance where you make the sound as you move. Strike by strike your feet lay down notes, and a full phrase turns into a beat that is entirely your doing.

Rock-Solid Timing

Placing sounds cleanly between the beats trains a precise inner clock. That ear for accent and syncopation feeds into singing, music and every other style you dance.

Easy on the Body

With barely any jumping, tap stays kind to knees and hips while firing up the calves and ankles — a workout you can carry on loving for decades.

Your Tap Dance Journey

From a first clean shuffle to inventing rhythms of your own — this is roughly how the months unfold.

Week 1–4

First Sounds

Getting Started

We start on the core four — shuffle, flap, ball change, stamp — drilling a clean, definite strike for each. The single time step makes an early appearance as well.

What to Bring

Loose, comfortable clothing and a set of tap shoes. Haven't bought any? Use a borrowed pair through the opening weeks and make your call later.

Month 2–3

Layering Rhythms

Developing Technique

The vocabulary opens out with paddle turns, drawbacks, cramp rolls and paradiddles. You begin leaning on accents, swinging a phrase and hearing where straight time splits from a shuffled groove.

Time Steps

Single, double and triple time steps grow familiar, and it dawns on you how much of tap is held together by these stock phrases.

Month 4–6

Playing the Music

Phrasing & Dynamics

Longer runs that mix soft and heavy sounds, quick and slow passages, and the nerve to leave a gap and let silence ring. Your first improvised bars turn up around now.

Shim-Sham & Trading

Picking up the classic shim-sham and swapping bars in call-and-response — the warmest, most sociable corner of tap.

Month 6+

The Hoofer

Advanced Sounds

Wings, pullbacks, over-the-tops and busier, more crowded sound. By now you can improvise the length of a whole song, play off the breaks and grow a rhythmic identity that is plainly yours.

What Comes Next

Layer in jazz to round out your technique, drop by a tap jam or workshop, or pick up Irish dancing for another take on rhythm made with the feet.

Tap Dance FAQ

The questions would-be tappers most often ask us ahead of a first class.

Can I take up tap in Chester with no dancing behind me? +

Definitely. Tap is built from a few plain sounds — a shuffle, a flap — added together bit by bit until a rhythm emerges. Our Chester classes keep an all-levels pace, so a complete beginner drills the same foundations as everyone else and is never pushed to rush.

Do I have to buy tap shoes before I come? +

No, not at first. We hold a few loan pairs for that opening visit so you can hear the metal plates ring before buying a thing. Once it grabs you, you can pick up a starter pair for somewhere around £25 to £35, and we're happy to recommend a comfortable fit.

What should I put on for a tap class? +

Go for something roomy and easy to move in — leggings or joggers with a comfy top do nicely. Because the whole dance lives in your feet, it pays to turn your hems up clear of the ankle so your footwork stays in plain view. Add a bottle of water and that's everything.

What does a tap class in Chester set you back? +

Just £10 for one drop-in, with no joining fee and nothing to lock into. Want to plan ahead? A four-week block is £32, which brings each class to £8. No contract and no membership — you simply come along on whichever weeks fit your diary.

Whereabouts in Chester are the tap classes held? +

They take place at our studio in the historic heart of Chester, only a few minutes from the Town Hall and the old City Walls and within easy reach of the rail station. We're opening further sessions across the area, so just ask and we'll steer you toward whichever class sits closest to home.

Is there ever an age where it's too late to begin tap? +

Not in the slightest. Tap involves very little jumping, so it stays gentle on the joints, which is why people happily carry on into their seventies and past it. Working out how to fit sounds to a beat keeps the mind busy too, so it keeps giving long after other styles ease off.

Is a tap class a proper workout? +

Rather more than newcomers assume. A solid hour on your feet keeps the heart working and tightens the calves, ankles and feet, yet leaves the knees and hips well alone. Add the concentration that holding a rhythm takes and both body and mind get a proper outing.

What music will we tap to in class? +

A good amount of swing and jazz — tap's natural territory — alongside funk, soul, blues and the occasional modern tune for contrast. The point is to quit tapping on top of a track and start feeding into it, so your feet become part of the rhythm section rather than a passenger on the melody.

Do we get to invent rhythms of our own? +

You will. Making rhythms up is one of the real pleasures of rhythm tap, and we lead you into it gently — shim-shams, call-and-response and swapping bars once your sound vocabulary is steady. Few things beat dreaming up a phrase on the spot and getting one fired straight back at you.

Can I book private or small-group tap tuition? +

Absolutely. We can arrange one-to-one or small-group tap tuition whenever you ask — handy for tightening up your time steps, gaining pace or getting ready to perform. Get in touch and we'll sort a time that works for you.
