Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up & Bounce
We open by waking up the joints and dropping into the bounce, the low, weighted pulse that carries every street style long before a single hit or freeze appears.
Foundation Drills
Each session homes in on a single style — top rock and footwork one week, popping waves the next, locking points and freezes after that — pulled apart slowly so the groundwork really sticks.
Combos & Crew Work
We thread those drills into compact sequences, fold in a beginner freeze or two, and rehearse landing the same accents together so a handful of dancers begin moving as one unit.
Freestyle Lab
Playful freestyle exercises push you to react to the track and commit to your own choices, slowly swapping the safety of a counted routine for instinct.
Cypher & Cool-Down
We close in an open ring where whoever feels ready takes a go and the room cheers it along, then ease everything down with a proper stretch.
About Street Dance Classes in Chester
Street dance never grew up in a mirrored studio — it was forged outdoors, in parks, car parks and late-night jams, with breaking, popping and locking as its pillars. Our weekly Chester sessions keep faith with that origin, teaching the honest mechanics of each style: breaking's footwork and freezes, popping's hits and waves, locking's crisp points and pauses. Then we turn the raw material into choreography — crew formations, unison hits and short showcase pieces you can rehearse and put in front of an audience. Every bit of it is yours to shape, never a chart routine copied frame by frame.
For all its student jams and one-off workshops, Chester has lacked a settled adult class that takes street styles seriously week after week. We close that gap from a studio tucked into the historic core, minutes from the Eastgate Clock, the timbered Rows and the old City Walls, on a broad, level floor that footwork, floorwork and tight crew lines actually demand. Dancers reach us from right across Cheshire and beyond — Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Wrexham and the Wirral, with Liverpool and Manchester each a short hop away — and every style is handed on with respect for its history yet kept welcoming for total beginners.
You need neither a dance background nor a crew of your own to walk in — the bounce is the great leveller, and the cypher opens up whenever curiosity beats nerves. Wear something forgiving you can hit the floor in, plus flat trainers with a soft, flexible sole. Take a look at the full line-up of 20 dance classes in Chester, or round up the group for a sweaty, brilliant street dance hen party.

What Street Dance Gives You
Roots, Not Knock-Offs
We hand you the genuine article rather than a thinned-down copy — where breaking, popping and locking came from and the logic behind how each move is assembled. Once the reasoning clicks, the physical side follows much quicker.
Invention On Demand
This is a craft of split-second invention. We train you to read a track and back your own instincts, so when the music plays you create on the spot rather than reaching for something memorised.
Fitness In Disguise
Relentless footwork, held freezes and quick changes of level tax your legs, core and lungs without ever feeling like the gym — sixty minutes that pass more like a game than a workout.
Crew & Circle Energy
Standing in a circle or locking into a formation is how shyness becomes swagger. Good-natured battles, routines drilled shoulder to shoulder and a crowd lifting every turn grow the confidence to perform — and leave you with people in your corner.
Your Street Dance Journey
From that opening bounce to standing firm in a crew line — this is roughly how it unfolds.
Finding the Bounce
Getting Started
We settle the basics — the bounce itself, breaking top rock, an opening popping hit or two and a clean lock. The goal is a body that moves with weight, attitude and a touch of swagger rather than stiffness.
What to Wear
Forgiving clothes that won't mind a trip to the floor — joggers, a tee, a hoodie — and soft, flat-soled trainers. Come ready to move and looking like yourself.
Building Vocabulary
Style Foundations
We push further into breaking footwork, popping waves and locking runs, picking up where each came from and noticing which one your body keeps returning to.
First Crews
Short routines start to appear, and with them the discipline of hitting shapes in unison — your earliest taste of formations and dancing as a crew rather than a soloist.
Finding Your Flavour
Your Own Style
Now you back the style that grabbed you, stretching freestyles longer, taking on harder combos and freezes, and weaving the foundations into something that could only be you.
The Circle
The cypher feels like home, you read the room and your character starts to show. Street dance is a scene as much as a lesson, and you have a place in it.
The Street Dancer
Sharper Skills
You freestyle assuredly across two or three styles, enjoy swapping rounds in a battle and invent combinations with the originality the culture rewards.
What Comes Next
Throw down at a regional jam or battle, specialise hard in one discipline, or pick up another of our classes to widen your grounding and grooves.
Street Dance FAQ
The questions newcomers ask most before they step into the circle for the first time.
Can I start street dance with no experience behind me? +
Easily. The whole vocabulary — breaking, popping, locking — rests on a loose bounce and a sense of groove, and that is the very first thing we teach. Each move gets dismantled and rebuilt at a gentle pace, the base before the flourish, so a complete first-timer and a seasoned dancer can stand on the same Chester floor without either one feeling out of place.
Is street dance the same as your hip-hop or commercial class? +
Commercial polishes camera-friendly routines cut to chart hits; hip-hop dwells on groove, party steps and freestyle. Street dance is the rawer cousin — breaking, popping and locking, the isolations and freezes, plus the crew formations and showcase pieces those styles feed. Our focus is sharp, stage-ready movement drilled in unison, a world away from miming a pop video.
Which styles am I actually going to pick up? +
The class circles the foundational three: breaking, with its top rock and floor footwork; popping, with its hits and rolling waves; and locking, with its snapped points and holds. You sample each across the term, gather the freezes and transitions that bridge them, and gradually mould them into compact routines to perform with the group.
How much does a street dance class in Chester set me back? +
One drop-in is £10, no sign-up and no paperwork. Fancy committing to a stretch? A four-week block is £32, which is £8 per session. Nothing is on contract and there is no membership to maintain — you just appear on the weeks that fit your diary.
Where exactly in Chester do the classes happen? +
From our studio in the old heart of the city, a few minutes on foot from the Eastgate Clock, the Rows and the riverside Groves. The floor is broad and smooth, just what footwork, freezes and crew lines call for, and as we add sessions across the region we will point you to whichever sits closest to you.
What kit and footwear should I bring? +
Wear clothes you can crouch, drop and spin in — trackies or joggers with a tee or hoodie, nothing that traps your shoulders. Trainers that sit flat, flex with the foot and carry a bit of padding will grip through footwork and spare your knees when you go down low. Personal style is half the fun, so dress however suits you.
Will I be forced to battle or perform for an audience? +
Battles and cyphers are woven into street culture, so each week leaves space for them — the cypher being the circle where dancers take turns, the battle a friendly trade inside it. Once crews form we set short routines to show as a group, too. Whether you step forward is entirely up to you; plenty watch, applaud and learn the formation long before their first go.
Does the class cover breaking, the b-boy and b-girl side? +
Yes — breaking sits right at the core. You will drill top rock, the six-step and other footwork, grow comfortable dropping low and rising again, and meet freezes scaled for beginners. Because strength and control build over time, the powermoves you see online get a measured run-up here instead of a punishing cold start.
What sort of music plays during class? +
Whatever the style demands. Funk underpins the locking, electro and synth-funk fuel the popping, and chopped breakbeats drive the breaking; hip-hop and a handful of crossover tracks sit in among them. The real skill is riding the drum and the accent rather than the tune — once that lands, the same song feels new under your feet.
Are private or crew sessions something I can book? +
Definitely. Private coaching and small crew sessions can be laid on whenever you like — to fine-tune one style, piece a routine together or rehearse a group toward a showcase, battle or event. Drop us a line with your goal and we will tailor the sessions to it.
