Warm-Up & Isolations

Springy jazz walks get the pulse going, then rib and shoulder isolations and a few easy stretches wake the body up for the kicks, leaps and turns to come.

10–25 mins

Technique Drills

We spend time on jazz squares, pas de bourrée, fan kicks and the head-spotting behind a tidy pirouette, repeating each at a calm pace until the vocabulary truly sinks in.

25–40 mins

Across the Floor

Travelling runs come next — chassés, turning combinations and the approach that fires off a leap — driving the movement boldly from one side of the studio to the other.

40–50 mins

Routine Building

A bite-sized routine with real Broadway swagger, set to a driving showtune — punchy, brimming with attitude and capped off with a cheeky burst of jazz hands.

50–60 mins

Performance & Cool Down

One final full-out run of the routine with all the showtime attack you can muster, before we calm the breath and stretch off the hamstrings, hips and shoulders.

About Jazz Dance Classes in Chester

Jazz is dance with the house lights up — a bold, theatrical style that weaves Broadway and commercial jazz together with high kicks, pirouettes, crisp isolations and sweeping leaps. Our weekly jazz classes in Chester teach the technique that lives beneath the stage and the music video alike, growing from tidy fundamentals toward short routines that call for real pizzazz and performance energy. Wherever you begin, you head home from each class having moved, performed and grinned in just about equal measure.

Chester has its theatres, society productions and amateur dramatics, yet a dependable weekly jazz class aimed firmly at adult beginners and improvers has long been tricky to track down here. We are launching ours at a studio in the heart of the historic city centre, a short walk from the Eastgate Clock, the Rows and the river at the Groves, pulling dancers from across Cheshire and in from Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Wrexham and the Wirral, with Liverpool and Manchester each inside the hour. With more sessions on the way, a class near home may be closer than you imagine.

Zero background and zero bendiness are needed on day one — your teacher unpicks each combination and stacks it back together at an unhurried pace, so jazz hands and leaps feel achievable from your very first session. Arrive in something stretchy that hugs the body, slip on jazz shoes or simply dance in grippy socks or bare feet, and fix your hair back before any spinning begins. Have a look through all 20 dance classes in Chester we run, or rally the group for a high-energy musicals hen party.

What Jazz Gives You

Showtime Energy

We design each routine for the stage, not just the memory bank. Expression, attack and presence are rehearsed hand in hand with the steps, so playing to an audience becomes instinctive.

Kicks, Turns and Leaps

Sky-high kicks, whirling pirouettes and ground-covering leaps are where jazz delivers its biggest buzz. We develop each one step by step from the ground up until it arrives powerful, neat and wholly within your grip.

A Technical Springboard

Because commercial, musical theatre and contemporary lean on the same jazz isolations, sharp lines and exact timing, the basics you nail in this room flow directly into whatever else you study.

A Joyful Workout

The constant kicking and leaping keeps your pulse racing, while the isolations and balances quietly recruit your core — a whole-body workout that somehow never feels like one.

Your Jazz Dance Journey

Charting the route from a wobbly first jazz square through to owning a full routine on the floor — this is how it tends to unfold.

Week 1–4

Jazz Foundations

Getting Started

Getting acquainted with the jazz square, ball change, chassé and pas de bourrée, plus moving the hips, ribs and shoulders in isolation. Those opening jazz walks and small quarter-turns start to carry you across the studio.

What to Bring

Stretchy, body-skimming clothes that let you move, paired with jazz shoes, grippy socks or nothing on your feet. Pin long hair up so it stays put when you spin.

Month 2–3

Sharpening Up

Developing Technique

Your first single pirouette, the fan kick, battements and the spring that fires off a debut leap all come into play. You also begin exploring dynamics — clipped, biting accents set against slow, sustained shapes.

Routines

Learning brief sequences set to bright showtunes and pop hits, and delivering them with personality instead of simply tracing the steps.

Month 4–6

Finding Your Pizzazz

Bigger Moves

Progressing to double pirouettes, calypso and stag leaps, rapid turning sequences and a little work on the floor, all woven into longer routines that swap direction in an instant.

Performance Quality

Adding expression through the face, hands and clear intention, and projecting all the way to the back row so the routine truly registers as a performance, not a rehearsal.

Month 6+

The Performer

Stage-Ready Jazz

Settled and assured in your kicks, turns and leaps, and able to shift between sultry Fosse, sunny Broadway and modern commercial jazz while keeping that performance glow alive.

What Comes Next

Add ballet to refine your line and control, contemporary to deepen expression, or commercial for a current twist — jazz dovetails happily with every one of them.

Jazz Dance FAQ

A few of the questions new dancers raise most before stepping into their first jazz class with us.

Can I take up jazz if I have never danced a step before? +

Absolutely — total newcomers are who these weekly Chester sessions are shaped around. Every kick, isolation and turn is pulled apart slowly and drilled until it sits easily, then knitted into a short routine. The tempo is geared to grown-up bodies and assumes you walk in with nothing learned beforehand.

In what way does jazz set itself apart from commercial or street? +

Jazz keeps one foot firmly on the stage. It fuses theatrical showmanship with sharp isolations, lofty kicks, leaps and pirouettes, each served with intentional attack and pizzazz. Commercial and street owe a great deal to jazz, but jazz puts its lines, its theatricality and its sense of story at the very front.

What do I need to wear and pack for a jazz class? +

Close-cut clothing that lets your lines read clearly — think leggings or joggers and a fitted top. Jazz shoes suit it best, though grippy socks or bare feet are fine while you find your feet. Tie long hair up so it holds through the spins, and carry water, because the kicks and leaps heat you up fast.

How much do your Chester jazz classes cost? +

A single drop-in is £10, with no joining fee and nothing to sign. Prefer to commit? A four-week block runs to £32, which brings each class down to £8. There are no contracts and no membership to maintain, so you simply come along whenever a slot fits your week.

Where in Chester are the jazz classes held? +

Our weekly regulars meet at a studio right in Chester city centre, a short walk from the Eastgate Clock, the Rows and the river at the Groves. It is simple to reach on foot or by train, and as further sessions open across the area we will gladly point you to whichever runs closest to home.

Must I already be flexible to begin jazz? +

Not remotely. The warm-up and drills steadily loosen the hips, hamstrings and shoulders, and the high kicks and broad extensions come good the longer you stick with it. You start within whatever range your body offers right now and see it widen week by week — splits on the first night are nobody's expectation.

What sort of music do you play during a jazz class? +

Loads of lively, performance-friendly music — swinging big band, theatre numbers, funk and today's chart pop. What plays depends on the mood of the routine, from sleek Fosse cool to a dazzling, kick-heavy Broadway finish topped with jazz hands.

Could jazz get me ready for the stage or auditions? +

It can do exactly that. Audition panels want tidy pirouettes, measured kicks, a fast grasp of choreography and real performance energy — every bit of which lives at the core of jazz. And should you never audition, that pizzazz and presence still spills into whatever else you dance.

Does jazz really count as a workout? +

It truly does. Powering through leaps, fan kicks and travelling runs keeps your heart rate up, while the isolations and balances quietly strengthen your core and steady your control. An hour of jazz leaves you warm, worked and beaming, yet it never carries that grind of a gym session.

Do you offer private or small-group jazz coaching? +

Yes indeed. We can arrange one-to-one or small-group jazz coaching on request, whether the aim is tighter pirouettes, polishing a routine or readying yourself for an audition. Drop us a message and we will shape the sessions around precisely what you are working toward.
